Why would you want to be on the OCA Board?

Well, sometimes I am wondering that myself. Financially the OCA is a very healthy club, and one of the main reasons for this is that we tend to be pretty frugal. There are no perks for board members like free hotel rooms or lavish dinner parties at events like the OCA Extravaganza. To the contrary, OCA board members are the people who volunteer most of the hard work that’s required to run events like the OCA Extravaganza, OCA Winter Auction and OCA Fishy Swap Meet. Of course we have – and could not do without – many dedicated volunteers from outside the OCA Board, but when push comes to shove, OCA board members are in charge. For the Extravaganza this includes for example setting up the tables in the show room, installing the airlines, registering hundreds of people, making sure everybody gets their welcome bag and t-shirt, handing out countless pieces of pizza, dealing with the hotel and vendors, and far too many other tasks to list them all.

There is always more than enough work to go around, and we will be sure to find you a suitable job if you would like to join us. In return you get the chance to work with a fantastic team of people and the wonderful feeling that comes from being part of something great – like the OCA Extravaganza, a world class fish convention that draws more and more people to Cleveland each year on the weekend before Thanksgiving.

The OCA board meets at 7pm on the Saturday of the week after OCA Meetings. Board meetings usually take place in the home of one of the board members, which brings us to the two perks that OCA board membership gets you after all – you get to see some amazing fish rooms, and the food at OCA board meetings is delicious! If you are interested in joining the OCA Board, talk to one of our Board Members at a meeting or an event, or simply send us an email.
