Rainer Stawikowski - South American Cichlids

Rainer has been an aquarist since 1960 and a Cichlid enthusiast since 1964.

He's been the editor of "DCG-Informationen" monthly journal of the German Cichlid Association and the editor of DATZ (Die Aquarien- und Terrarien-Zeitschrift), Germany's leading aquarium journal, since 1983 and chief editor since 1988.

Rainer's long tenure in the hobby has allowed him to collaborate on A few books including: "Die Buntbarsche der Neuen Welt - Mittelamerika" (1985), "Die Buntbarsche der Neuen Welt - Südamerika" (1988) (both with Uwe Werner), and "Fische im Biotop-Aquarium" (1990). Additional works include, "The Biotope Aquarium" (1992), "Die Buntbarsche Amerikas, Band 1" (1998, again with Uwe Werner), "Die Buntbarsche Amerikas, Band 3" (coming 2003) and has published articles in several aquarist journals.

He has taken part in the description of Theraps coeruleus (Stawikowski & Werner, 1987), Vieja breidohri (Werner & Stawikowski, 1988) and described Uaru fernandezyepezi in1989 (Stawikowski 1989).

Rainer's main interests today revolve around South American Cichlids, first of all earth eaters, but that has not kept him from traveling to Mexico (15 times), Ecuador, Brazil and Guyana exploring what other lands have to offer in Cichlids and habitats.
